The Vietnam Information Safety Association (VNISA) says hackers broke into 1,039 Vietnamese websites in the first two weeks of September, the highest figure in any two-week period so far this year.

The cyber criminals logged on using fraudulent passwords and even managed to breach websites under the management of the Government (.gov.vn) and education organizations (.edu.vn).

VNISA disclosed most of the criminals were from China, Indonesia, Syria, and Turkey.

Tran Quang Chien, executive manager of VNISA’s Securitydaily.net, revealed 30 government websites were hacked within the two-week period. This poses an inherently significant threat to the entire internet security system in Vietnam, he noted.

According to Chien, 4,767 websites in Vietnam have been attacked since the beginning of 2014, twofold the number of websites in the 2011-2013 period. On average, more than 18 local websites are hacked everyday, he said.
