The fake licences have been detected since December 1, 2014, the day on which the new-material (Polyethylene terephthalate or PET) driving licences were issued in Vietnam.

Nguyen Thang Quan, a senior official from the Road Administration, said that most of the fake licences were found in southern provinces.

"Not only old-form driving licenses (paper), but also PET licences were fake," Quan said.

Those found with fake licences are banned from driving tests for five years and cannot reapply for a license during that time, he said.

To deal with this problem, traffic police and inspectors have been allocated 1,000 specialized devices to detect fake driving licences.

To date, over 6 million PET driving licenses have been issued, including more than 2.5 million auto driving licenses.
