The research, carried out on 769 male patients aging between 19 and 74 coming to the hospital for different diseases, found out that 13 per cent of them suffered a loss of sexual drive. Those under the age of 45, notably, accounted for 58 per cent, 16-per-cent higher than those over 45.

Common medical knowledge believes that sexual desire will decrease over time in line with aging: the older you grow, the less you want to have sex.

An opposing trend, however, has been taking place in Viet Nam, with more and more young men showing little interest in sexual pleasure.

Doctor Nguyen Hoai Bac of HMUH’s Department of Andrology told Tuoi tre (Youth) newspaper that loss of libido is a sexual disorder diagnosed by symptoms of having reduced or absolutely no thoughts about or longing for sexual activity. The disorder can last continuously or for under six months, Bac said.

“What is worrisome is that the number of men with diminished sex drives is growing, mainly concentrating within the best male fertility age range of 30 to 45,” he said.

A 35-year-old patient coming to the department told Bac that he was no longer interested in sex with his wife after five years of marriage. Worse still, he feels numb toward all other women.

It initially started about two years ago when his wife was pregnant, he said, and they had to steer clear of intercourse. The couple then felt awkward to have sex, as the baby slept with them all the time, plus a busy work schedule gradually turned off the mood.

“There were months when we did it only once or twice in a rush,” he said. “I feel like it is a responsibility, not a pleasure lately”.

According to Bac, libido is a mirror reflecting the general male health.

“A libido shows a good mental and physical health. Therefore, an increase of low libido in the young is an alarming sign for the health of the community,” Bac said.

The doctor believes that the trend is an unwanted consequence of the modern life, with mounting pressures and a polluted living environment.

Young men should try to control factors causing stresses, exercise more and give up bad habits like drinking and smoking to stay fit and avoid the risk of suffering low libido, Bac said.
