VietNamNet Bridge – At noon of August 1, the second whirlwind swept over the three southern provinces of Soc Trang, Bac Lieu and Ben Tre, damaging nearly 350 houses.

Whirlwinds kill 2, damage 450 houses in the south



After the two whirlwind in the morning and at noon of August 1, more than 1,000 houses in southern provinces were damaged.

In Bac Lieu alone, over 500 houses in four districts were damaged, including 234 houses that were completely collapsed. Whirlwinds also killed one, injured 13 people and destroyed around 200 hectares of paddy. The total losses are estimated at VND20 billion ($1 million).

Mr. Lai Thanh An, Chairman of Bac Lieu Flood and Storm Control Steering Board’s Office, said that the authorities gave VND6 million ($300) to families whose houses were collapsed, VND5 million to the family of the dead victim and VND2-3 million to injured people.

In Soc Trang province, over 320 houses were harmed by the calamities. The number of injured people is 63. Total losses were not reported by late afternoon of August 1.

Soc Trang’s Vice Chair Tran Thanh Nghiep said the province gave VND15 million ($750) to families whose houses were collapsed, VND3-5 million to those whose houses were partly damaged, VND500,000-1.5 million ($25-75) to each injured person.
