A museum on Vietnam’s wet rice cultivation in the Mekong Delta will be built in Vung Liem district in the Mekong Delta province of Vinh Long, according to the Sai gon Giai phong daily.

The newspaper quoted the spokesman of Vinh Long People’s Committee as saying on September 29 that the museum will be constructed on an area of around 3 hectares, with an estimated investment of 70 billion VND (3.29 million USD).

The museum will introduce the history and development of the country’s wet rice agriculture, with the aim of serving scientific research and tourists.

Wet rice civilisation has formed and developed in Vietnam for thousands of years, with the Mekong Delta being the largest rice granary of the country.

The delta exported o ver 4 million tonnes of rice by September 20, representing 64.2 percent of the region’s annual rice export target, the same as last year.

Vietnam has now become one of the world’s leading rice exporters. Domestic exporters shipped 4.243 million tonnes of rice abroad during the first eight months of 2014.
