Participants at the 17th Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) Ministerial Meeting, which wrapped up in Algiers, Algeria on May 29, expressed their deep concern about recent developments in the East Sea.

In the final statement adopted at the meeting, they called for a peaceful resolution to sovereignty and territory disputes in the East Sea, while affirming their support for principles regulated in ASEAN’s 1992 Statement and the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the East Sea (DOC).

Delegates emphasised the need to observe the basic principles of the movement and international relations, including those of respecting international law, the UN Charter, national sovereignty and territorial integrity, peace co-existence, without intervention in internal affairs of other countries and the use of force or threat to use force.

Vietnam and other ASEAN member nations made proposals with updates on progress of cooperation in Southeast Asia and the East Sea developments.

Participants also pledged to respect international law to ensure aviation and navigation freedom in the East Sea.

The meeting also adopted the Algiers Statement on enhancing unity for peace and prosperity, and the statements on nuclear disarmament, information technology and communications, and Palestine issue.
