Since early 2011, as a result of climate change, natural disasters have occurred in many areas over the world.

Last year, it was no surprise to see unprecedented natural disasters happening and causing havoc in many places, such as widespread flooding in East Australia considered as the most destructive in the past 50 years and other floods and landslides in Brazil that killed thousands of people.

It is common knowledge that most disasters originate from people’s behavior known as gas exhaustion, wanton destruction of forests – the earth’s lungs – and other natural resources and increasing discharge of wastes and harmful wastes into the environment. The impact of climate change has become more serious with consequences for people in both rich and poor countries.

In Brazil, more than 1,000 people were left dead or missing by the recent floods and landslides. How the geographic structure of Rio de Janero state would change is a wild guess.

Meanwhile, more than 200,000 people have been affected and more than 10,700 houses damaged by the unprecedented floods in Australia in the past 50 years. Heavy rains caused flash floods which have isolated many towns and submerged many residential and business areas. The coal and tourism sectors are grinding to a halt. Total losses are estimated to reach US$6 billion. According to experts, Australia’s economic growth will slow down and inflation will go up in tandem with the soaring prices of food.

In the 20th century the disasters occurred with more alarming frequency and left behind more serious consequences than before. At this pace, the world’s total losses are estimated to hit at least US$3,000 billion a year up to the middle of the 21st century

Preventing and mitigating natural disasters is the responsibility of every community in the world. They can apply advanced technologies to control floods or combat droughts to a certain extent.

People can improve the warning system or reinforce buildings and dykes to minimize damages caused by earthquakes. However, the most important thing is to raise public awareness of the need to reduce environmental pollution, which is the main cause of climate change.
