Van Chay Beach, the most beautiful on Co To Island in Quang Ninh, is strewn with domestic garbage, and tourists are avoiding it because of a stench.

Tran Nhu Long, chairman of the Co To District People’s Committee, said changes in the winds and rainy weather have dumped the trash on the beach.

The district has a campaign to clean the beach regularly, he said.

Quynh Long Beach in Nghe An Province is covered in tree branches, bamboo shoots and plastic for half a kilometre of inland.

Tran Van Nguyen, chairman of the Quynh Long Commune People’s Committee, said he has no idea where the garbage is from.

There are an estimated hundreds of tonnes.

Nguyen said local authorities and residents are working together to clear the mess.
