VietNamNet Bridge - Vietnam will invest VND3 trillion (around $150 million) to train human resources for the nuclear power sector from now to 2020.

This funding is for a plan that will be jointly implemented by the Ministry of Science and Technology, Ministry of Education and Training and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

Around VND2 trillion ($100 million) will come from the State Budget and the remaining $50 million will be invested by the State-owned Electricity of Vietnam Group (EVN).

Under this plan, from now to 2020, local universities and institutes will cooperate with foreign partners to train around 2,400 engineers and bachelors, 350 master degree holders and doctors for nuclear power plants in Vietnam. This year 48 students have been selected for an atomic technology course in Russia.

“Training human resources for the nuclear power industry is among top priorities of Vietnam’s nuclear power development plan to 2020,” said Deputy Minister of Science and Technology Le Dinh Tien.

Tien said Vietnam would pursue its national nuclear power program at the safest level, after the Fukushima accident in Japan.

“Vietnam has to train a large number of workers who are equipped with full knowledge of nuclear power to be able to operate a nuclear power plant safe and sound,” said Yanko Yanev, an expert of IAEA.
