At the meeting of Quang Ngai Provincial People’s Council on Monday, Mr. Cao Khoa, Quang Ngai Chairman said that the floods from November 14 to 16 caused damage estimated at VND1.73 trillion for the province. There were 15 people killed, one missing, 65 injured, 210 houses collapsed, 785 houses and 180 government offices, clinics and cultural houses damaged, nearly 400 classrooms and a lot of roads and infrastructure works severely hit by floods.

At present, dozens of households in the mountainous districts of Son Ha and Ba To are living in tents, waiting for the province’s support to build new houses.

Many families lost their homes and assets, making the poverty rate increase by 1 percent (equivalent to 470 households with 2,000 people), bringing the total number of poor households in the province to nearly 47,500.

Quang Ngai has asked the government’s supply of VND350 billion, 2,000 tons of rice, 800 tons of rice and vegetable seeds and chemicals, and medicine to people in the stricken areas.

At this meeting, the Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee of Quang Ngai province reported local people’s worries on severely deteriorated reservoir which can become "catastrophic" every rainy season.

The province has 116 reservoirs built before 1980 but most of them have seriously deteriorated, threatening thousands of households living in the downstream area. Local people asked the authorities to quickly upgrade these reservoirs to ensure the safety of people.
