Vietnam women’s team enters a new cycle

Challenges

Following the highly successful era under coach Mai Duc Chung, the Vietnam women’s team now enters a sensitive transition period as Hoang Van Phuc takes over the role left by his predecessor.

The first and most immediate challenge is the weight of expectation. Under Mai Duc Chung, the team reached unprecedented heights, securing multiple regional titles and, most notably, qualifying for the FIFA Women’s World Cup. Those achievements cast a long shadow, requiring the new coach not only to maintain standards but to elevate the team further.

At the same time, squad composition presents a complex issue. Key players such as Bich Thuy, Hai Yen, Huynh Nhu and Tran Thi Kim Thanh are moving beyond their peak years. While their experience remains invaluable, the impact of age is unavoidable.

Meanwhile, the younger generation, though gradually introduced in recent years, has yet to deliver a breakthrough strong enough to fully replace the veterans. The task of refreshing the squad - building a team that balances continuity with competitiveness - will be a demanding challenge for Hoang Van Phuc in the period ahead.

Expectations

Amid these challenges, Hoang Van Phuc’s decision to take on the role is seen as a bold move. From that boldness, expectations are beginning to take shape.

Firstly, he is not unfamiliar with women’s football. Having worked alongside Mai Duc Chung in recent tournaments, he has gained insight into the specific dynamics of the women’s game, from team management to tactical development. This familiarity is expected to shorten his adjustment period.

Secondly, his coaching experience provides a solid foundation. Having led Vietnam’s U23 team, guided Quang Nam to a V-League title, and played a key role in the youth development system at Hanoi FC, his background is particularly valuable at a time when the national team requires significant renewal.

In addition, the Vietnam Football Federation is not placing heavy pressure on immediate results during the initial phase. This offers crucial breathing space for experimentation, allowing the new coach to implement a more modern playing style and gradually guide the team into a new and promising chapter.
