In recent years, A2 protein has attracted growing interest from parents and nutrition experts because of its digestive benefits for infants and young children. However, scientists now suggest that the impact of A2 protein on human health may be far broader and more comprehensive than previously understood.

On June 3, The a2 Milk Company hosted the scientific symposium "A2 Beta-Casein Protein and Scientific Evidence for Holistic Health" in Ho Chi Minh City. The event drew significant attention from domestic and international experts, leading healthcare professionals, and representatives from the New Zealand Consulate General in Ho Chi Minh City.

During the symposium, experts shared multidimensional medical perspectives on the application of A2 beta-casein protein, a nutritional trend that is increasingly being embraced by consumers seeking to build a stronger health foundation for Vietnamese families.

From infant digestion to holistic health

Presenting a clinical perspective at the symposium, MSc. Dr. Doan Thi Lan,  from the Pediatrics Department at Bao Son General Hospital, noted that demand for nutritional solutions supporting children with digestive challenges has increased in recent years. Against this backdrop, A2 protein has attracted considerable attention from both professionals and consumers.

According to MSc. Dr. Doan Thi Lan, A2 protein has attracted considerable attention from both professionals and consumers.

Early research into A2 protein primarily focused on milk tolerance and digestive experiences among individuals who experienced discomfort when consuming conventional cow's milk.

As a result, A2 protein became widely associated with digestive health. According to experts, however, this represents only the beginning of the scientific journey.

One of the most discussed topics at the symposium was the gut-brain axis - the bidirectional communication system linking the gastrointestinal tract and the central nervous system. Researchers increasingly recognize that processes occurring in the gut can influence numerous functions throughout the body.

According to MSc. Dr. Do Dang Tri from the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Medicine and Pharmacy at Ho Chi Minh City and Children's Hospital 1, growing evidence points to a close connection between gut health and the immune system, sleep quality, emotional well-being and cognitive performance.

"While A2 protein has traditionally been viewed as an alternative for people who experience discomfort with regular cow's milk, scientific evidence is increasingly suggesting broader potential benefits for holistic health rather than focusing solely on digestive function," Dr. Tri said.

A 26-year journey pioneering A2 protein research

As scientific understanding of A2 protein expands, one name consistently appears within global dairy and nutrition circles: The a2 Milk Company.

Founded in New Zealand in 2000 by Dr. Corran McLachlan and business partner Howard Patterson, the company is widely recognized as a pioneer in researching the differences between beta-casein protein variants found in cow's milk.

For more than 26 years, the company has maintained a singular mission: researching, developing and delivering milk naturally containing only A2 protein to consumers around the world.

According to information presented at the symposium, that mission has resulted in 70 patents related to A2 protein and contributions to more than 200 scientific publications examining A2 beta-casein and its potential health benefits.

Notably, current research extends far beyond infant nutrition.

According to clinical studies conducted and shared by The a2 Milk Company at the event, milk containing only A2 protein has demonstrated positive indicators across several population groups.

Among breastfeeding mothers and infants, studies suggest potential benefits in reducing digestive discomfort and supporting gut health.

Among young children consuming formula, A2 protein has been associated with improved digestive function, reduced regurgitation and less crying.

Among older adults with mild cognitive impairment, some studies have reported improvements in memory, executive function and overall quality of life.

Setting a new benchmark for advanced nutrition

A representative from the New Zealand Consulate General in Ho Chi Minh City noted that the evolution of A2 protein research serves as a strong example of how scientific investment, innovation and clinical evidence can drive advances in nutrition.

Building on decades of scientific inquiry into the differences between A1 and A2 proteins, The a2 Milk Company has focused exclusively on sourcing and standardizing milk containing only A2 protein.

"The a2 Milk Company, founded in New Zealand, has spent more than two decades pursuing a clear mission: understanding A2 protein and delivering science-based nutritional solutions to consumers around the world. What began as a scientific question has evolved into a significant field of research. Through continuous investment in clinical studies, scientific advancement and consumer education, the company has been a Pioneering corporation and contributed substantially to global understanding of the differences between A1 and A2 beta-casein proteins," the representative said.

In Vietnam, The a2 Milk Company continues working to make pure A2 protein nutrition more accessible.

Its current product portfolio includes nutrition solutions tailored to different life stages, including pregnancy nutrition products for expectant mothers; the Premium a2 Platinum(R) and Gentle Gold™ lines for infants and young children; and a range of products for families, including Full Cream UHT, full cream milk powder,  and Fortified milk powder a2 Immune™  for Immunity supporting.

The symposium concluded with a clear message: A2 protein is no longer viewed as a niche nutritional solution. Increasingly, A2 beta-casein is being positioned as a new benchmark in advanced nutrition, offering potential benefits for individuals and families across every stage of life.
