Officials who have been recently promoted must continue to use their predecessors' cars, and can request for a new vehicle only if the old one fails to meet safety and other standards set by the government.

Government officials, including chairmen of the People's Committees and the People's Council, party secretaries of provinces and cities as well as deputy-level officials of various offices and agencies under the National Assembly, the government and the National Font are permitted to use only one government car, the cost of which should not exceed VND1.1 billion (US$50,000).

These guidelines have been stipulated in a resolution meant to tighten the regulation and management of four-wheelers purchased and used by officials in government agencies, government-run enterprises and one-member companies wholly owned by the state, which has been approved by Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung.

Government cars would be considered for replacement after they have been used for an extensive period, or have travelled at least 25,000km or 20,000km in mountainous and isolated regions. The cars will then be examined to determine whether a new car is required.

Used cars will be subject to regulations on the handling and management of government property.
