The Committee agreed early this week that the Frontier Solution Viet Nam company and Viettel Telecommunications Group would install cameras for a trial period.

The cameras are expected to reduce traffic jams, help fight fires, detect criminals and the drivers violating traffic laws. The cameras can turn 180 degrees and operate 24 hours a day. The images captured by the cameras will be transferred to the management centre of Sai Gon river tunnel and then to the municipal police.

The 12-lane Pham Van Dong boulevard passes four districts: Tan Binh, Go Vap, Binh Thanh and Thu Duc. It starts from Tan Son Nhat airport and continues until National Highway 1.

The construction project connecting Pham Van Dong Boulevard to National Highway 1 which is underway is expected to reduce the frequency of vehicles overtaking on this important urban street. To implement the project, authorities asked 4,000 households to move.

Since October, the city planned to install as many as 13 surveillance cameras in seven other locations that commonly experience heavy traffic across HCM City.

City authorities said that the installation of cameras at these traffic spots was significant as it allows the timely inspection of traffic flow and incidents. It also helps traffic police guarantee traffic order and social security.

These cameras have been proved very efficient in Viet Nam. More than 200 drivers were caught on camera violating traffic regulations, the Ha Noi Traffic Police Division reported early this week, 10 days after the surveillance camera programme went into effect.

A total of 450 cameras have been placed at more than 150 intersections in Ha Noi since the beginning of December.
