The newly built passenger terminal of Vinh Airport in central Nghe An province officially opened for business on January 31.
The new terminal has a total floor area of 11,700 square metres, including four boarding gates, 28 check-in counters, and other facilities meeting international standards.
Construction of the terminal started on April 26, 2013 with the aim of serving up to 1,000 passengers at peak hours and three million passengers a year.
In addition, expansion projects for aircraft parking areas, access roads and parking areas were also inaugurated.
Total investment for the construction of the terminal and expansion projects is worth VND1.2 trillion (US$56.4 million), invested by Airports Corporation of Vietnam.
Speaking at the ceremony, Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc emphasised that inauguration for many important facilities at the same time is of great importance to ensure efficient operation and rapid development of Vinh Airport in the future, as well as facilitating travel for locals in Nghe An and the north-central region.
The Deputy PM asked local government and related authorities to boost investment in transport infrastructure and tourism, creating favourable conditions for socio economic development in Nghe An and the wider region.
On the occasion, low-cost carrier Vietjet Air held a ceremony at the airport to welcome the 10 millionth passenger served by the airline after more than three years of operation.
The lucky passenger, Kang Jeong Hee, a Korean businesswoman working in Ho Chi Minh City was on the flight VJ270 SGN-VII, she was awarded with free Vietjet Air flights for one year.
In addition to Vietjet Air, national flag carrier Vietnam Airlines and another low-cost carrier Jetstar Pacific are also operating flights at Vinh Airport.
