VietNamNet Bridge – Dreams are coming true for former champion Song Lam Nghe An who continued their winning streak with a 1-0 victory over Dong Tam Long An on Saturday at Vinh Stadium.
Bryan Kavin scored the only goal with a straight shot against the host team in the seventh minute, helping his team widen the distance from trailing rivals.
Kavin had a number of golden opportunities to raise the score but, like his teammates, was unable to find the net despite the fact that Long An was down to 10 players after captain Minh Thong was sent off in the 63rd minute.
Unfortunately Kavin was sent to Ha Noi after the match because of a serious ankle injury that he received after a crash in the second half. Doctors said Kavin would have to finish his season earlier than expected and would not go to Jamaica to meet up with the national team.
Song Lam Nghe An now have 35 points after 15 matches and will lead the rankings after at least two rounds because runner-up SHB Da Nang lost 0-1 to Hoang Anh Gia Lai on Saturday, leaving them seven points behind.
Under the new leadership of coach Huynh Van Anh, Gia Lai fielded their strongest players in an attempt to repay the debt of losing 1-2 in the first half of the tournament.
They converted their power with a goal in the third minute by Duc Duong passed by Da Nang's loose defence to hit the net. Goalkeeper Thanh Binh took a shot at Duong's shot but failed to block it.
"A series of losses in the first half had me worried but my players are confident and our tactic of counter-attacks was well implemented," said Anh who debuted on Saturday.
Despite playing their best Da Nang was limited to resisting Gia Lia in the last quarter and failed to reach the net.
In Ha Noi, Ha Noi ACB claimed three valuable points to help them move away from the relegation zone, beating Thanh Hoa 2-1.
National team member Thanh Luong brightened in the second half to open the score in the 75th minute with a solo performance among Thanh Hoa's defenders with a perfect head shot.
Ten minutes later it was 2-0 for Ha Noi when Duc Giang tapped the ball into the net after goalie Manh Dung pushed it away.
The visitors found a goal in the last seconds when a narrow corner shot slipped past keeper Minh Phong.
ACB are currently third from the bottom with 16 points. Hai Phong won 2-0 over Khatoco Khanh Hoa and have a better goal difference.
In other matches, Dong Thap lost 0-2 to Navibank SG and Vissai Ninh Binh defeated former champion Becamex Binh Duong 2-1.
