On April 1 evening, two more deaths were found in a quarry collapse at the foot of Len Co Mount in Nam Thanh commune, Yen Thanh district, Nghe An province, taking the death toll to 18, including 11 women.

Earlier, 16 workers were found dead after more than 1,000 cubic meters of rocks that slid from Len Co Mount buried 35 quarry workers yesterday morning, said Colonel Nguyen Huu Cau, deputy director of the Nghe An province Police Department.

Another 6 victims who were seriously injured in the accident were taken to hospital for emergency treatment.

The local authorities mobilized about 300 policemen, soldiers, health workers and specialized vehicles to the site to help with the rescue operation that faced difficulties due to the complex terrain.

Chin Men Co., Ltd. was licensed to exploit the quarry, with five mining sites set up there.

Yesterday afternoon, the provincial Police Department requested Chin Men to submit all records related to the operation of its five mining sites.

The provincial authorities have offered VND5 million (US$239) to each family of the dead and VND3 million to each injured worker.

Two other quarry collapses previously broke out in Yen Thanh district and the mine’s exploiters and families of the victims negotiated to settle the accidents’ consequences.
