VietNamNet Bridge - Three living people were registered as dead by officials of Thanh Chi commune in Thanh Chuong district, Nghe An province, to seek funeral allowances. Meanwhile, 37 dead people were declared to be alive to take monthly allowances for the elderly.
According to the Inspection Commission of Thanh Chuong District, 37 elderly people died many years ago but the Thanh Chi commune authorities still reported that they are alive to get monthly allowance for the elderly.
The commune also raised the age of 8 people to receive more than VND43 million ($2000) of the elderly allowance; appropriated part of the subsidies of mentally and disabled people.
In addition, three living people were registered dead by the local officials in order to earn funeral allowance.
The Inspection Commission of Thanh Chuong District recalled nearly VND100 million related to violations of the local officials.
The officials involving in the case include the commune Party Secretary, the commune chairman and vice chairman, the commune accountant and an official in charge of social welfare.
