VietNamNet Bridge - The beneficiaries died but some commune officials still named them in the list of social benefits to embezzled more than VND140 million ($7,000).
Recently, a number of people in the mountainous commune of Cat Van in Thanh Chuong District, Nghe An province accused their commune officials of not rejecting dead people from the list of beneficiaries of social welfares, to embezzle over VND140 million.
The authorities of Thanh Chuong district conducted inspection based on the accusation and proved that the accusation is true.
Accordingly, from 2011 to June 2012, Cat Van commune still paid monthly social welfares to 26 people who were dead. These people were the beneficiaries of the social welfare policy for people who deserve well of the country. The total amount is VND143 million ($7,000).
On September 13, relevant agencies met and asked Cat Van commune to urgently recover the money.
Bui Nguyen Lan, Director of the Nghe An Provincial Department of Social, War Invalids and Social Affairs said: "Cat Van commune officials admitted their mistake and we have recovered the money. We gave a warning to Chairman of Cat Van commune – Gian Tu Ngo and expelled from the Party and fired Tran Huu Vinh, who is in charge of implementing the social welfare policy and reprimanded Cat Van commune’s accountant Nguyen Viet Chuc".
Nghe An police are investigating the payment of social welfare in this commune from 2006 to present.
