VietNamNet Bridge - Nguyen The Thao, 59, won roughly 94 percent of the vote to continue to lead the Hanoi People’s Committee for the 2011-2016 term, according to the election result released on June 20.


Meanwhile, Ngo Thi Doan Thanh, 54, was re-elected as head of the Hanoi People’s Council for the same term with 93 out of 95 ballots.

Thao has a PhD in economics and is an architect by profession. He is the only candidate for the position.

In September, 2007, he was voted as chairman of the Hanoi People’s Committee and was re-elected in 2008 when the capital was expanded.

Before moving to Hanoi, Thao was the Party Secretary of Hanoi’s neighboring province of Bac Ninh.

At the XI Party Congress held this January, Nguyen The Thao and Ngo Thi Doan Thanh were voted as members of the Party Central Committee.

On June 20, the Hanoi People’s Council also voted to approve vice chairs of the People’s Committee of the new term. Of the six vice chairs, four were re-elected, including Vu Hong Khanh, Nguyen Van Khoi, Nguyen Thi Bich Ngoc and Nguyen Huy Tuong.

The two newly-elected vice chairs are Nguyen Van Suu (Director of the Hanoi Department of Planning and Investment) and Tran Xuan Viet (Director of the Hanoi Department of Agriculture and Rural Development).

Le Van Hoat, Party Secretary of Me Linh District, was elected as vice chair of the Hanoi People’s Council while Nguyen Van Nam (chief of the Hanoi People’s Council’s Economics and Budget Department of the last term) won the vote to become permanent member of the People’s Council.

After winning the election, Chairman Nguyen The Thao introduced many solutions to develop Hanoi, with per capita income of $4,300 by 2015.
