The event saw Oanh face off against seven strong foreign rivals from Japan and China, with the Vietnamese athlete ultimately getting to the finish line with a time of nine minutes and 18.41 seconds.
The winner of the event went to Caroline Chepkoech Kipkirui of host country Kazakhstan with a time of nine minutes and 01.98 secs, while He Wuga of China won second place with a time of nine minutes and 03.43 seconds.
Oanh’s participation in the event comes off the back of a career-defining 2022, during which she won both the 1,500m and 3,000m steeplechase, as well as in the 5,000m, setting a new record in the steeplechase in the process.
She also won gold at the National Sports Games (NSG) in the 1,500m, 3,000m, and 10,000m steeplechase, setting another record in the last category.
Her best time in the 1,500m is was four minutes and 16.67 seconds. Her SEA Games record in the 3,000m steeplechase stands at 9:52.44. However, she has not competed in the 3,000m for almost three years.
Oanh won bronze medals in both events in the previous tournament edition back in 2018.
Meanwhile, her teammate Nguyen Thi Huyen successfully qualified for the final round of the women's 400m event, which will take place on the afternoon of February 11.
Also at the competition, rising star Luong Duc Phuoc will also compete in the final round of 1,500m event on the same day.
The Asian Indoor Athletics Championships 2023 attracted the participation of 500 athletes from 31 countries and territories, competing in 26 disciplines of running, throwing, jumping, and all-around events.
