Minh crashes out of Yonex Open
Viet Nam's top badminton player, Nguyen Tien Minh, was ousted from the 2015 Yonex Open Chinese Taipei yesterday.
Unseeded player Minh lost to seed No 5 Chou Tien Chen of Chinese Taipei 12-21, 14-21 in the third round of the men's singles.
Earlier, world No 35 Minh defeated seed No 9 Hu Yun of Hong Kong in the second round 22-20, 21-3 in just 29 minutes.
This US$200,000-prize tournament is a Grand Prix Gold category tournament and is the eighth of its kind in 2015.
National team chess tourney opens
The National Team Chess Championships began yesterday in the northern province of Bac Giang.
About 132 chess players from 15 cities and provinces nationwide such as Ba Ria-Vung Tau, Bac Giang, Bac Ninh and HCM City, besides Ha Noi, are competing in the championships.
The nation's top young male competitors at the event include Nguyen The Phu, Nguyen Dinh Trung, Nguyen Hoang Hai and Truong Anh Kiet. Luu Ha Bich Ngoc, Nguyen Hai Phuong Anh and Nguyen Ha Phuong are among the female competitors.
The best players of the championship will be chosen to compete in the coming international tournaments.
The tournament will end on July 25.
Khoi wins gold with new record
Tran Duy Khoi of HCM City won the gold medal and broke his own national record in the men's 200m backstroke at the National Youth Swimming Championships, which started in HCM City yesterday.
Khoi finished with a time of 2:05.01, beating his old record of 2:05.10 set in the last year's event.
A relay team of HCM City swimmers also broke the national record in the men's team 800m event with a time of 8:02.28.
Nguyen Diep Phuong Tram of HCM City based-National Sports Training Centre won two gold medals in the women's 200m medley and 200m backstroke.
After the opening day, HCM City took the lead with five golds, one silver and five bronzes. Long An came in second with three golds, seven silvers and two bronzes. Quang Binh placed third with three golds and one silver.
The event will run until July 20.
