The Secretary of the Communist Party’s Central Committee has turned down a request by the HCM City People’s Committee to hold a fireworks show to celebrate the 42nd Reunification Day (April 30) and Labour Day (May 1), according to the city’s Department of Culture and Sports.
The city had planned to hold a 15-minute fireworks show at 9pm on April 30 in District 2’s Thu Thiem; in Dam Sen Park in District 11; and in the rural districts of Cu Chi and Can Gio. Costs would have been funded by local organisations.
The city had asked the Secretariat for approval earlier this month.
During the Tet (Lunar New Year) holiday in late January, fireworks shows were banned in cities and provinces to set aside money to help the poor.
Tran Tuan Anh, deputy director of the department, said that streets and parks in the city would be alive with festivities during the national holiday.
Outdoor music and song programmes as well as art exhibitions will be organised at local cultural houses on Saturday and Sunday.
Dam Sen, Suoi Tien and 23/9 parks in HCM City will offer new games and art performances thousands of visitors and children from southern provinces during the holiday.
