Northern mountainous provinces including Quang Ninh, Lang Son, Thai Nguyen, Bac Kan, Cao Bang, Ha Giang, Tuyen Quang and Lao Cai are on the alert for landslides and flash floods in river-side areas.

Heavy rain, ranging from 150mm to 250 mm, could increase the water volume at reservoirs of hydro-power plants in the region.

On Saturday, the National Steering Committee for Natural Disaster Prevention and Control asked Son La and Hoa Binh hydropower plants to release water from their reservoirs to lower the volume.

Heavy rain during the weekend reportedly caused landslides at two spots on National Highway 3B, blocking traffic from Bac Kan City to Cho Don District in the northern province of Bac Kan.
