In the smartphone industry, manufacturers often compete by presenting ever larger and more impressive numbers. These may include higher megapixel cameras, faster charging speeds, brighter displays, or increasingly thinner designs. Yet such figures sometimes serve more as marketing tools than as features with genuine value for users.
Nothing’s new smartphone, the Phone (4a) Pro, follows this trend to some extent. At launch, the company strongly promoted its 140x zoom capability as one of the device’s most striking features.
However, a closer look reveals that the real story behind this US$499 phone is not the zoom figure, but what users actually receive at this price point.
In reality, the Phone (4a) Pro may be one of the most notable mid-range smartphones of the year. The issue is that the emphasis on 140x zoom has inadvertently overshadowed its more meaningful advantages.
140x zoom sounds impressive, but offers limited real value
First of all, the 140x zoom advertised by Nothing is not optical zoom but digital zoom.
The device does include a telephoto camera with a periscope lens offering 3.5x optical zoom, which can indeed be useful in many photography situations. Beyond that point, however, the camera system relies on digital cropping and heavy software processing, which almost certainly reduces image quality.
This approach is not unusual. Most smartphones today combine optical zoom with image-processing algorithms to extend magnification levels. The problem lies in the scale of the claim.
Even on flagship smartphones, image quality typically begins to decline noticeably before reaching 10x or 20x zoom.
For a mid-range device priced at US$499, reaching 140x zoom is almost certainly more of a novelty feature than a practical one.
At such levels of magnification, images often become blurry, noisy, and lacking in detail. Users might experiment with the feature once or twice out of curiosity, but few are likely to rely on it regularly.
Yet this is precisely the feature Nothing chose to highlight most strongly in its marketing.
For many observers, that decision feels like a missed opportunity, because the phone actually offers far more compelling qualities.
Features that deserve more attention
Interestingly, the Phone (4a) Pro does not need attention-grabbing marketing tricks to stand out in the mid-range segment.
At a price of US$499, the device delivers a powerful hardware package. At its core is a Qualcomm processor that significantly improves performance compared with the previous generation.
According to the company, CPU performance increases by about 27 percent, while graphics processing improves by nearly 30 percent compared with the earlier Phone (3a) Pro, which had already been well regarded for its price.
Nothing has also been generous with memory.
The device uses LPDDR5X RAM, a standard typically found in flagship smartphones, paired with UFS 3.1 storage. This combination enables fast operation and smooth responsiveness in everyday tasks, from multitasking to gaming.
The display is another highlight.
The Phone (4a) Pro features a 6.83-inch AMOLED panel with high resolution and a 144Hz refresh rate, significantly higher than what is typically offered in the mid-range segment.
The screen can also reach peak brightness of up to 5,000 nits when displaying HDR content, an exceptionally impressive figure.
These specifications indicate that the phone not only delivers strong performance but also offers a display experience that feels far more premium than its price suggests.
Large battery and fast charging for daily use
Beyond performance and display, the Phone (4a) Pro is equipped with a 5,080 mAh battery.
Based on previous battery tests of the earlier generation, the device could operate for around 7 hours and 15 minutes in standardized battery benchmarks. The new model will likely deliver similar or slightly improved endurance.
The phone also supports 50W fast charging, allowing it to reach about 60 percent battery capacity in roughly 30 minutes, according to the company.
For many users, this means that a quick charge during a short break or coffee stop could provide enough power to last the rest of the day.
Looking at the overall specifications, the Phone (4a) Pro clearly emerges as a well-rounded mid-range device, with several features that exceed expectations for its price.
A good phone does not need gimmicks
All these factors suggest that the Phone (4a) Pro is genuinely an appealing choice in the roughly US$500 smartphone segment.
Strong performance, a premium display, a large battery, fast charging, and a capable camera system together create a device that offers excellent value for money.
For many users, it could easily become one of the most attractive smartphones of the year.
For that reason, focusing heavily on the 140x zoom claim appears unnecessary, and perhaps even misleading. The device’s true value is already compelling without relying on exaggerated figures.
In reality, emphasizing gimmick-like features can sometimes cause users to overlook a product’s real strengths.
The Phone (4a) Pro does not need a flashy headline such as “140x zoom” to capture attention. The story is much simpler: it is a powerful smartphone offered at a remarkably reasonable price, and that alone is worth highlighting.
