The plan was recently approved by the municipal Transport Department.
Under the scheme, vehicle owners will be required to park on the side of the street with odd-numbered houses on odd days and on the side of the street with even-numbered houses on even days.
The city’s Transport Department has assigned the Ha Noi Parking Company under the Ha Noi Transport and Services Corporation to work with the local transport inspectorate, the committee for transport infrastructure preservation and relevant authorities to install parking signs and paint parking lines. The parking areas must not be in front of offices, alleys, block entrances along pavements and fire department booths, as well as bus stops and traffic connection points.
The transport inspectorate is responsible for supervising and imposing penalties for illegal parking and encroaching upon streets and pavements. This month, dissemination activities to spread information to individuals, businesses and organisations along Nguyen Gia Thieu Street on the new parking scheme will be stepped up. Penalties will be imposed from next month.
Earlier, in December last year, Da Tuong Street in Hoan Kiem District became the first street to pilot the new parking regulation as part of local authorities’ efforts to ease traffic congestion in the inner city and ensure fairness to business owners on both sides.
Currently, on several streets in Ha Noi, car parking is fixed at specific places on one side of the street. Many residents complained this caused inconvenience to local business owners because the cars blocked shops and restaurants, which resulted in fewer customers. Shops on the other side where no cars were parked benefited more.
