Local authorities confirmed on January 6 that the incident occurred in Binh Thanh Commune, Tuy Phong District.
The meal took place on January 5 at the home of 58-year-old D.G., with participants including D.V.L. (31, Binh Thanh), N.V.B. (55, Binh Thanh), H.A.T. (51, Lien Huong Town), and L.V.X. (59, Thuan Nam District).
The pufferfish, caught by D.V.L. during a fishing trip, was prepared by D.G. and D.V.L. for lunch.
By 3 p.m., all five men exhibited symptoms of poisoning, including tongue numbness and facial discoloration. They were rushed to Tuy Phong District Medical Center for emergency treatment.
Medical personnel diagnosed severe pufferfish poisoning and transferred the patients to higher-level care.
Unfortunately, H.A.T.’s condition deteriorated rapidly, and he passed away later that evening. The remaining four individuals are recovering under close medical supervision.
Pufferfish is known for its highly toxic tetrodotoxin, which can cause severe poisoning and death if consumed improperly. Authorities continue to caution the public against consuming or handling pufferfish without proper knowledge and preparation.
