Dr. Nguyen Trung Cap, Deputy Director of the Emergency Ward, the Central Hospital for Tropical Diseases, said the patient was admitted to the hospital on the morning of January 31 in critical condition and died that night.

The test specimens were positive for the swine streptococcus.

Earlier, on January 28, the patient's family slaughtered their pig and processed blood pudding. One day later, the patient had a fever and digestive disorders but he did not go to the hospital.

In the afternoon of January 30, he was exhausted and suffered from hypotension and was taken to the commune health station and then to the provincial hospital. After a day of treatment, the patient was transferred to the Central Hospital for Tropical Diseases in Hanoi.

According to Dr. Cap, this case developed very fast. Only one day after having a fever, the patient suffered from hypotension and shock though he did not have typical symptoms of streptococcal disease yet.

The doctor said, on the occasion of New Year, many families have a habit of slaughtering the pigs raised by themselves, and eat blood pudding because they believe that the pigs could not be infected with diseases. However, that thinking is wrong.

Streptococcus bacteria normally inhabit in the throat of pigs without causing diseases. When people eat undercooked pork or blood pudding from these pigs, the risk is very high.

In addition, the streptococcus bacteria infection depends on the resistance of each person, as well as the number of streptococcus bacteria entering the body. Therefore, many people eat blood pudding together but only one or several of them can get the disease.
