According to initial reports, the accident befell at 2:30 a.m. when a passenger coach, registered BS 51B - 402.70, crashed into another similar sized vehicle, registered BS 78B - 009.38. The first coach was travelling on Vo Nguyen Giap road towards Nha Trang-Da Lat, whilst the second was heading south on National Highway 1.

Following rescue efforts at the scene, passengers on board both coaches were transferred immediately to local hospitals to receive treatment.

According to Nguyen Van Dan, director of the Khanh Hoa Department of Transport, one victim died upon arrival at the hospital as a result of the collision, whilst a further three people suffered severe injuries.

The passenger coach bearing the BS 78B - 009.38 registration plate was completely damaged in the incident with the entirety of its glass windows being destroyed.

As for the coach registered BS 51B - 402.70, the front of it was completely destroyed.

The top deck of one coach had collapsed into the bottom half.

Many of the items that were onboard the coaches were left scattered throughout the road.
