VietNamNet Bridge – The government is considering halting the experimental operation of HUD and Song Da groups. However, the number of state-owned economic groups will reduce to only 5-7, said Chairman of the Government Office Vu Duc Dam at the government’s press briefing on September 5.

Dam said the government was very interested in restructuring state-owned enterprises, in which the focus is re-arranging state-owned groups and corporations.
The responsibility for restructuring state-owned enterprises would be clarified on personal basis, from the Prime Minister to Chairs of groups and corporations and Chairs of provinces and cities, Dam added. For instance, the Prime Minister will take responsible for restructuring big economic groups that have great influence on the national economy and security. Ministers and chairs of provinces will take responsibility for other groups and corporations.
Vietnam currently has 11 economic groups but in the future, they will be reduced to 5-7 groups, Dam said.
In addition, Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung will take higher responsibility for several significant groups like the Vietnam Post and Telecommunications Group (VNPT), Electricity of Vietnam (EVN) or Vietnam Oil and Gas Group (PetroVietnam).
According to many economic specialists, many economic groups exposed their weaknesses in production, business and capital management, personnel. Their profit is very poor compared to the resources they are allocated by the state.
