VietNamNet Bridge – Experimental art has become quite popular in Vietnam in the last few years, but not in the mainstream. People may read or hear about it, but few attend art installations, listen to noise music or meet the artists. Open Stage Project aims to make experimental art more accepted among young audiences.
Open Stage started as a project by Arabesque Dance Company and HCMC Drama Theater Company in 2010. The core idea of the project was create a stage where artists and audience can interact and connect in monthly workshops and performances. The program was temporarily interrupted and started again in the beginning of January.
The space for Open Stage was redeveloped from an old practice room for HCMC Drama Theater at Le Thanh Theater, 25 Phan Phu Tien Street, District 5 about 25 minutes from the city. Audiences shouldn’t expect air conditioning or comfortable theater seats; instead there are a industrial fan and seagrass cushions on concrete stairs.
The Spartan conditions were a tradeoff for free tickets. The strategy has worked so far as productions often enjoy good audience numbers. People come out of curiosity at first, and then they return for the shows.
The art performances also convey the
message of openness. You would be forgiven to think that as hosts the dance
troupe and theater company would present just dance and drama. It is not the
case. The performances are diverse - art installations, noise music, movies…
Experimental art does not need a cultural standard or agreement from the
audience.
The shows simply tell the story and encourage the audience to have their stories as well. After the performances, audience can talk to the artists about their understanding of the show and the emotions they felt. Choreographer Tan Loc said in the discussion with the audience on Sunday: “It matters that we share our ideas. You guys do not have to believe in only one right idea. You could have different opinions according to your backgrounds or feelings about the performances.”
The venue is also used for workshops.
