VietNamNet Bridge – The plan to cut off the 90kg tumor in the right leg for 31-year-old Nguyen Duy Hai from Da Lat city on November 16, has been canceled because the patient now suffers from pleural effusion.

Upon arrival in HCM City on November 8, Hai was brought to Hoan My Hospital for preoperative tests such as CT scans, blood and urine tests, where doctored diagnosed that the patient suffered from pleural effusion in his left lung.

According to doctors, this is probably caused by the pressure of his overweight tumor on his chest.

Le Hoang Minh, Director of the HCM City Tumor and Cancer Hospital said that patients of pleural effusion are easily prone to respiratory failure and death during a surgery.

Minh said doctor sucked out around 200cc of a milky solution from Hai’s lung. The solution will be tested.

He added that because of this incident, the operation scheduled on November 16 will be canceled.

He said the time of operation depends on the patient’s health. “We will hold another meeting with the surgical team before making decision,” he added.

The tumor appeared on Hai’s leg when he was four. The tumor grew gradually but Hai’s family could not afford to cure it. In July 2011, when Hai was brought to the HCM City Tumor and Cancer Hospital, his tumor was 80kg in weight. For one month and a half later, Hai’s tumor has grown bigger and gained nearly 10kg.

On October 26, doctors decided to perform an operation to cut off the tumor in mid-November, with the assistance of American physician McKay McKinnon and four assistants.

A filmmaking crew from California-based Morningstar Entertainment has recently filmed Hai’s case in Da Lat and will make a documentary for Discovery Channel about Dr. McKinnon’s operation.
