Today (March 21), Thong Nhat Hospital announced that it had successfully coordinated with the National Coordination Center for Organ Transplantation, Cho Ray Hospital, Hue Central Hospital, and the University Medical Center Ho Chi Minh City to complete an organ transplant procedure from a brain-dead donor across Vietnam.

The donor, T.H.N., was admitted to Thong Nhat Hospital on March 17 after suffering cardiac arrest, respiratory failure, and multiple severe injuries. Following successful cardiopulmonary resuscitation, he was transferred to the Department of Anesthesia and Resuscitation for monitoring. Despite the doctors’ tireless efforts, the patient fell into a potential brain-dead state due to extensive brain damage.

After discussing with the hospital’s Organ Donation Mobilization Association, the family of T.H.N. made the compassionate decision to donate his organs and tissues upon brain death. The hospital activated its system to independently assess the patient’s condition, ensuring both legal and professional protocols were followed.

From the evening of March 18 to the morning of March 19, a professional council conducted three separate evaluations to confirm brain death.

On March 19, Dr. Le Dinh Thanh, Director of Thong Nhat Hospital, led a specialized consultation with experts from the National Coordination Center for Organ Transplantation, Cho Ray Hospital, Hue Central Hospital, and the University Medical Center Ho Chi Minh City.

At 2 PM on the same day, doctors and medical staff held a moment of silence to pay tribute to the donor before proceeding with the transplant surgery.

"We extend our deepest gratitude to the donor’s family for overcoming their immense loss and performing such a noble act," shared Dr. Thanh.

According to initial assessments, the retrieved organs were of good quality and were promptly transported to appropriate hospitals for transplantation.

Two kidneys were successfully transplanted into two patients at Thong Nhat Hospital. The heart and part of the liver were transplanted to two patients at the University Medical Center Ho Chi Minh City, while another part of the liver was transplanted at Hue Central Hospital. Two corneas were given to two patients at Cho Ray Hospital.

During the early hours following the surgeries, all patients showed promising recovery prospects.
