The Prime Minister’s meeting with the national women's football team after the team won the right to enter the FIFA World Cup, Vietnam’s successful organization of the 31 Southeast Asian Games (SEA Games), and the repatriation of Vietnamese citizens from Ukraine were three of the outstanding events in 2022.

Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh meets with national women's football team

On February 6, the Vietnamese women's football team defeated Taiwan (China) with a score of 2-1 in the play-off round and won a ticket to the 2023 World Cup finals. Four days later, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh had a meeting to congratulate coach Mai Duc Chung and his players after they returned home from India. The 29 members of the Vietnamese women's team were awarded the First-class Labor Medal and certificates of merit by the President and Prime Minister. 

SEA Games 31 successfully held in Vietnam

The 31st SEA Games held in Vietnam in May was different from the previous Games. Of the 40 sports with 523 categories at the games, 25 sports compete at Olympic Games and 12 at the Asian Games. The event also had impressive numbers such as 1,341 athletes, 30 new records, and 2,970 volunteers.

Vietnam ranked first at the 31st SEA Games, with a total of 446 medals, including 205 gold medals, exceeding the set target (140 gold medals). Vietnam also broke the record of the number of gold medals made by Indonesia in 1997 (194 gold medals). In addition, Vietnam successfully defended the championship in both the men’s and women’s football categories.

Repatriating Vietnamese from Ukraine 

In the early days of March, due to the Ukraine-Russia conflict, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs coordinated with the Ministry of Transport to urgently carry out procedures to bring Vietnamese citizens home. On March 8, the first Vietnamese in Ukraine arrived at Hanoi’s Noi Bai airport.

Funeral of three firemen who died in karaoke bar fire held in Hanoi 

On August 5, at the National Funeral House in Hanoi, the funeral for three firefighters who died on duty was held by the Hanoi Police and their families. Earlier, on August 1, while performing their duty to save people from a fire at the karaoke bar at 231 Quan Hoa Street, Cau Giay District, Hanoi, the three officers of the Fire and Rescue Police Team of Cau Giay district died.

Hanoi - Mong Cai expressway opens for traffic

On the morning of September 1, the Van Don - Mong Cai expressway with a total length of 80km officially opened to traffic. The project helped shorten the traffic time from Mong Cai to Ha Long to only 1 hour 30 minutes, and from Mong Cai to Hanoi to 3 hours compared to 5.5 hours before.

Petrol shortage in Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi

From early October to mid-November, the shortage of gasoline occurred in many localities, including Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City. 

Vietnam International Defense Exhibition

Vietnam International Defense Exhibition 2022 took place from December 8 to 10 at Gia Lam Airport, Hanoi, attracting the participation of 174 defense industry enterprises from 31 countries and territories. On the opening day, people witnessed spectacular performances of SU30-MK2 aircraft and Mi helicopter in the skies of Hanoi.

West Lake Boat Race 2022

On October 9, the Hanoi Open Dragon Boat Tournament 2022 took place at Hanoi’s West Lake, with the participation of more than 500 athletes.

Vietnam Motor Show 2022

Vietnam Motor Show 2022, the largest exhibition of Vietnam’s automotive industry, took place from October 26-30 at the Saigon Exhibition and Convention Center in HCM City. The event had the participation of 14 car brands including: Audi, Brabus, Honda, Jeep, Lexus, Mercedes-Benz, Mitsubishi Motor, Morgan, MG, RAM, Subaru, Toyota, Volkswagen, Volvo. Brabus, Jeep, Morgan and RAM joined the exhibition for the first time.
