The Border Guard of Lai Chau Province launches a bamboo planting model in the border area to help women and people in Huoi Luong commune of Phong Tho district develop the local economy and protect the border.

The program "Accompanying women in border areas" has been jointly implemented by the Vietnam Women's Union and the Border Guard Command since 2018. Through the program, a total of 1,346 livelihood models have been implemented in 26 border, mountainous and island provinces and cities.

According to statistics of the Vietnam Women’s Union, 324 models were developed in phase 1 (2018-2020), 1,022 models in phase 2 (2021 to April 2023), attracting the participation of 12,610 members. Specifically, the Vietnam Women's Union coordinated with related agencies launch three texting campaigns to raise fund for the implementation of 73 models (100 million VND/1 model) for women in ethnic minority, mountainous and border communes.

In 5 years (2017-2022), the Women's Union at all levels supported 63,864 women to start businesse. Particularly, it is reported that about 1,100 ethnic minority women successfully started businesses; Nearly 200,000 women got training, science and technology transfer, and job placement; 4,747 cooperative groups/cooperatives managed by women, which creat jobs for female workers, were established; 210 difficult border communes were provided with 6.5 million breeds for free and nearly 5 billion VND in loans.

Livelihood models focus on 5 groups: Livelihood support in crop production, animal husbandry/agricultural production; support access to finance for livelihood development; livelihood support associated with maintaining, preserving and promoting traditional culture; support for startups, business, product consumption, tourism, livelihoods associated with the value chain, and technology application; livelihood support throughvocational training, job placement consulting...

Thanks to these livelihood models, families that were previously listed as poor, near-poor, and disadvantaged ones have escaped poverty. The lives of members, women, mountainous people, and ethnic minorities are improving day by day.

A typical example is the orchid planting model of Ms. Giang Thi Dua, Mong ethnic woman in Sin Suoi Ho village, Sin Suoi Ho commune, Phong Tho district, Lai Chau province. Thanks to the assistance of the local Women's Union, she was able to borrow 74 million VND from the Bank for Social Policies and the Vietnam Women's Union. She then invested in planting orchids to serve tourists and sell to flower shops in Lai Chau city, Sapa, Hanoi...

Thanks to the livelihood models, the material and spiritual lives of women and the community in many mountainous and border areas have been improved.
