A large group of endangered snakebirds has made an unexpected appearance at Buu Long Tourist Area in Dong Nai, with over 100 individuals now nesting in the lake’s central tree.
On July 23, representatives of Buu Long Tourist Area (Bien Hoa City, Dong Nai) announced the discovery of a rare flock of over 100 snakebirds nesting in a tree in the middle of a lake within the tourist area.
The flock consists of many individuals, from juveniles to adults, living together and often foraging in the lake and resting in tall trees. These birds have long necks and sharp beaks, enabling them to hunt fish underwater, with their bodies submerged, resembling snakes.
According to Buu Long Tourist Area staff, snakebirds were first discovered here in 2019, with a population of up to 500. However, the number has significantly decreased since then.
Snakebirds belong to the family Anhingidae and were previously classified in the order Pelecaniformes. They are listed as Group 1B in Vietnam's Red Data Book, indicating they are a rare species with a high risk of extinction.
