The workers fell sick an hour after having lunch at the factory. More than 1,000 workers joined the lunch. The victims reportedly had stir-fried bitter melon with eggs, braised pork and baby Kai Lan. Soon after eating, they vomited and complained of headache and abdominal pain.

As the number of workers showing the symptoms continued to rise, the company’s management rushed them to Binh Duong General Hospital and Binh Duong Medic Clinic.

By 6.30pm on Tuesday, most of the workers were in stable condition and discharged from the hospital and clinic, except those who had a severe case of poisoning and a pregnant woman. They had to stay at the hospital overnight for monitoring.

Tran Huu Nhon, head of Binh Duong Medic Clinic, said braised pork was suspected to cause the poisoning, reported the Thanh Nien (Young People) newspaper as hospital records showed that the number of workers who vomited were less than those with severe abdominal pain.

Binh Duong health officials have collected food samples from the private company Thap Toan, which provides meals to Jin Chang Shoes, for investigation.
