Deputy PM urges ensuring smooth organisation of high-school graduation exam

The biggest requirement set for this year’s national high school graduation exam was ensuring strict implementation of the exam, said Deputy Prime Minister Vu Duc Dam.

The leader led a working session to inspect preparation for the national exam in the northern province of Hai Duong on May 21.

The Ministry of Education and Training has decided to combine the annual national high school graduation exam and the university entrance exam from this year forward instead of being held separately, as in previous years.

The results of the exam will determine if students graduate from high school and qualify for admission to tertiary education at a university, college or vocational training school.

The deputy PM affirmed that the long-term goal of the exam’s organisation was to impact teaching methods. The deployment of this year's exam as well as organisation of the exam in the coming years should be geared strongly towards creating the most favourable conditions for candidates.

He also asked that tertiary education quality and career building be improved to ensure quality for students.

Deputy PM Dam asked the Ministry of Education and Training to thoroughly clear up public queries about the exam and facilitate travel of candidates from mountainous localities to exam venues, as well as assisting schools during the exam period.

According to Hai Duong provincial Steering Committee for 2015 High School Graduation Exam, this year 20,635 local candidates will take the exam, with 12,495 taking their exam in venues organised by universities and 8,140 candidates in exam clusters chaired by the provincial Department of Education and Training, with 12 exam venues of 276 rooms.

Hai Duong leaders affirmed that vocational consultancy and information about the exam has been thoroughly provided to students.

According to the latest statistic from the Division of Testing and Education Quality Assurance under the Ministry of Education and Training, nearly 1,004,490 students nationwide enrolled for this year’s national high school graduation exams. Of the number, 279,001 candidates only wish to take the high school graduation exam, over 592,934 wish to use the exam results for university or college enrollment, and 132,552 have graduated high school in the previous year and want to register for college or university.

Students will sit for tests from July 1 to 4 in three compulsory subjects – maths, literature and a foreign language - and one optional subject – physics, chemistry, biology, history or geography.

Mathematics, literature, history, and geography will be taken in the form of an essay, while multiple-choice tests will be applied for physics, chemistry, and biology. For foreign language test, participants will be tested in both forms.

Da Nang City authority recruits school managers through competition

After piloting for a long time, the central city of Da Nang is recruiting many principals, deputy principals all at once to offer opportunity for talented young people who are perfectly of good management.

Instead of appointing managers in schools following the old way which base on achievements and devotion, authorities in districts in Da Nang City actively planned recruitment of these positions for schools.

Announcement of recruitment had been publicized to ensure all people to know about it so that every person who is of good management capacity can participate in the competition.

This policy not only created concurrence in education sector but also among the public. In addition, the education sector can recruit managers who are talented and who put their heart into the education profession.

Moreover, many good young people have been found to have plans to improve education quality which will be applied right after they take up the management position.

Furthermore, the breakthrough also offered motive to young good teachers who desire an improvement for the sector to compete each other.

In fact, the policy to recruit headmaster and deputy headmaster through competition has been carried out in some provinces such as the southern province of Ba Ria- Vung Tau; the northern province of Quang Ninh and Ho Chi Minh City’s District Tan Binh yet no province did it in many schools like Da Nang City.

The reality showed that the recruitment of school managers is an urgent mission to improve education sector thoroughly as some principals are currently not able to manage.
