The traffic police agency also recommended that those who are using cars with diplomatic, foreign or international number plates for wrong purposes must return the plates, pay taxes and re-register the vehicles, otherwise the registration number plates will be confiscated under the law.
On June 20, the Road-Railway Traffic Police Department established working groups to conduct patrols in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City to inspect cars with diplomatic, foreign and international registration plates.
Particularly in Hanoi, before the campaign was launched, there were 508 cars had to return the diplomatic, foreign and international number plates. So far, most of the car owners have fulfilled the re-registration procedures.
According to statistics of the Ministry of Public Security, the country has about 4,000 diplomatic cars imported from 1998 to the end of August 2009. Thousands of which have not used as diplomatic cars any more but they have not been re-registered, resulted in tax losses for the state budget.
