Director of Quang Nam Provincial Health Department said that they had set up an inspection team on Wednesday afternoon to deal with the food poisoning case at the Madam Phuong Banh My Hoi An at 2B Phan Chau Trinh Street, Hoi An City.
According to the department's report, many local people and tourists had baguettes stuffed with pate, sliced meat, herbs, lettuces, pickled vegetables, and egg sauce bought at the Madam Phuong Banh My Hoi An shop on the morning of September 11. From 11 am that day, some of them started to develop high fever, stomach aches, diarrhea, and vomiting and had to be sent to hospital for treatment.
By the afternoon of September 13, 91 people, including over 30 foreign tourists, had been hospitalised with the same problems after having the same baguettes bought at Madam Phuong Banh My Hoi An shop on September 11, the department said. "Many of them have recovered after receiving treatment. We've collected the food samples for testing."
The shop said that they sold 1,920 such baguettes on September 11.
The shop has been temporarily closed while local authorities are carrying out an investigation.
A customer, Vivian Campbell, 69, a tourist from Australia, said that she ate a baguette bought at Madam Phuong Banh My Hoi An shop on September 11 and had a stomach ache over the past two days. She decided to come to Vinh Duc General Hospital on the morning of September 13 for treatment.
Doctor Tu Thi Ngoc Mai at the hospital said that they had received many patients suffering the same food poisoning problems on September 12 and 13.
"Many of them have recovered but some still need further treatment," she said.
