Oversea Vietnamese doctor Nguyen Thanh Tung has been appointed as a member of the US President's Advisory Commission on Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders by US President Barack Obama.

After getting his B.A. in Philosophy from Harvard University, Tung continued to do an M.D’s at the Stanford School of Medicine, and was later invited to teach at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF).

Currently, he is a professor of Medicine at UCSF, and also serves as Director of the Vietnamese Community Health Promotion Project and as Principal Investigator of the Asian American Network for Cancer Awareness, Research and Training at UCSF. He is conducting research into healthcare prevention for Asian Americans.

His continual studies are related to breast, and cervical cancer, colorectal cancer screening, and harmful affects of tobacco use on Asian Americans.

In 2002, he won the American Cancer Society Control Career Development Award for his outstanding work in primary care and research.

The key to success, Tung said, is constant efforts and patience.
