Overseas Vietnamese stars made an impressive entrance into the V-League 2024/25, drawing praise from fans and coaches alike, with coach Kim Sang Sik quietly celebrating their potential.
During the match between Hanoi FC and Binh Dinh, the standout was Kyle Colonna, an overseas Vietnamese newcomer from the United States.
Standing 1.88 meters tall and demonstrating sharp tactical awareness, Colonna dominated aerial duels and offered strong support to the forward line. In a key moment during the first half, his header came close to opening the scoring.
Coach Le Duc Tuan commented: “Kyle Colonna has integrated well. He is very capable. Colonna, having a Vietnamese mother, understands the culture and has bonded well with his teammates. Many overseas Vietnamese players have submitted profiles to Hanoi FC, but we only select those who fulfill specific positional needs.”
If Colonna continues his current form, he may compete for a starting position alongside Duy Manh once the Vietnamese national team center-back returns.
At Ha Tinh’s home ground, the hosts shocked fans by defeating the defending champions, Nam Dinh. The game’s only goal was scored by Adou Leygley Minh, an overseas Vietnamese player. Though a defender, Minh proved highly dangerous in attack, scoring from a corner kick.
Despite standing under 1.80 meters, the 27-year-old outjumped taller defenders from Nam Dinh to head the ball into the far corner, leaving goalkeeper Tran Nguyen Manh no chance. Minh, alongside Helerson, formed a solid central defensive partnership in front of goalkeeper Thanh Tung.
“I highly value how quickly Adou Minh has adapted to Ha Tinh and Vietnamese football. He plays solidly and stays focused throughout the match. I hope Minh continues to maintain his form and contribute more to Ha Tinh,” said coach Nguyen Thanh Cong.
At Lach Tray Stadium in Hai Phong, overseas Vietnamese player Jason Pendant Quang Vinh continued to impress while playing for Hanoi Police FC. The defender, born in 1997, seamlessly balanced offensive and defensive responsibilities, easing concerns about the police team’s defense as they await the return of Van Hau. Unfortunately, despite Quang Vinh’s strong performance, Hanoi Police FC managed only a 1-1 draw after conceding a last-second goal.
In another match, between HCM City FC and The Cong Viettel, overseas Vietnamese goalkeeper Patrik Le Giang showed solid form, helping HCM City FC secure a point in a goalless draw. Le Giang, who had the fewest goals conceded in the V-League last season, looks set for another strong campaign.
This season, each team is allowed to register up to two overseas Vietnamese players (double the number from last season), adding excitement to the V-League and offering future options for the Vietnam national team.
