On August 6, in Hanoi, the State Committee for Overseas Vietnamese under the Ministry of Foreign Affairs held a press conference to share updates on upcoming activities celebrating the 80th anniversary of the August Revolution and Vietnam’s National Day (September 2, 1945 – September 2, 2025), aimed at engaging the overseas Vietnamese community.
Attending the event were Nguyen Trung Kien, Chairman of the State Committee for Overseas Vietnamese; representatives from related departments; and members of major national and local media outlets.
Chairman Nguyen Trung Kien stated that the committee is proposing to higher authorities that a delegation of overseas Vietnamese participate in the official ceremony marking Vietnam’s 80th National Day. This initiative fulfills the aspirations of many expatriates who wish to be directly involved in significant national events. It also expresses deep gratitude for the contributions of overseas Vietnamese to the country’s independence and socio-economic development.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in collaboration with other agencies, is actively preparing for this delegation to ensure the success of the celebration.
Among other major initiatives, the committee will organize a Vietnamese language teaching training course for 80 Vietnamese teachers from 15 countries and territories. Scheduled from August 13 to 28, the course will be held in Hanoi and in provinces such as Ninh Binh and Thai Nguyen.
The training aims to improve teaching quality, professional qualifications, and pedagogical skills of overseas Vietnamese teachers, using curriculum tailored for expatriate learners. It also integrates elements of Vietnamese history and culture to reinforce identity and pride through language education.
Since 2013, the committee has partnered with the Ministry of Education and Training to conduct 12 such courses, benefiting over 890 overseas Vietnamese teachers.
Also in August, the committee will host the awards ceremony for the "Vietnamese Language Ambassador Contest Abroad," scheduled for August 21 in Hanoi, alongside the “Beloved Vietnamese Language Gala.”
Held from March 29 to August 21, the contest attracted wide participation from the overseas Vietnamese community. Over 50 entries were submitted in various formats - from prose and poetry to multimedia presentations - expressing heartfelt love for the Vietnamese language and national pride.
Many submissions demonstrated creativity, community involvement, and a strong sense of cultural responsibility. Participants often linked their works to local community efforts, showing their passion to spread the language globally.
Chairman Nguyen Trung Kien emphasized that overseas Vietnamese language ambassadors are not only exceptional individuals in promoting and preserving the language, but also vital cultural bridges helping to share Vietnamese identity worldwide.
On August 14, Hanoi will also host the 2025 "Day of Honoring Vietnamese Language" closing ceremony in a hybrid format. The event will review activities carried out in 2024-2025 and propose future plans to further promote Vietnamese language among expatriates.
Themed “The eternal river connecting all directions,” the closing gala and awards ceremony on August 21 aims to portray Vietnamese as a living stream of culture and soul that flows across time and space, connecting generations.
These efforts seek to celebrate the beauty of the Vietnamese language and promote it among Vietnamese communities worldwide, reinforcing it as a sacred symbol of national identity and unity.
Kien highlighted that Vietnamese is the soul of Vietnamese culture. Each idiom, proverb, or lullaby reflects the rich depth of national heritage. Through these programs and performances, the committee hopes to awaken national pride and preserve cultural values - especially among the younger overseas Vietnamese generations.
The event stands as a call to collectively preserve the “river” of the Vietnamese language, ensuring it flows strong across generations. Through the inspiring stories and creativity of Vietnamese language ambassadors, the programs aim to ignite deep emotional connections, encourage cultural pride, and foster lifelong ties to the homeland.
