VietNamNet Bridge – Scientists of the Institute of Geophysics have found out signs of tsunamis of thousands of years ago in Nghe An and Ha Tinh provinces in central Vietnam.

Last October, a 3.8 Richter scale earthquake were reported in Yen Thanh
 district in Nghe An province.

The institute’s Dr. Cao Dinh Trieu said that there are signs of three tsunamis on the coast of Nghe An and Ha Tinh provinces around 4,500-4,300 years ago, from 4,100 to 3,900 years ago and from 900 to 600 years ago.

These tsunamis were possibly caused by earthquakes of at least 7.5 Richter scale. The waves were up to ten meters high.

Dr. Trieu said that these tsunamis left several banks of oysters and snails on mountain sides in this region.

“The initial discover of palaeo-tsunamis in this region can help scientists define earthquake levels in Vietnam to give accurate warnings,” Dr. Trieu said.

He added that in case of earthquakes of up to 9 Richter scale at the Manila seismic belt in the Philippines, Nghe An coast may have to confront tsunamis of 7 meters.

Scientists said that the Song Ca zone of faults and its branch – Cua Lo in Nghe An province show signs of operation in modern time. Earthquakes of up to 6 Richter scales were recorded there.

Last October, a 3.8 Richter scale earthquake were reported in Yen Thanh district in Nghe An province.
