Lan, a local in HCM CIty, said her son started his summer break on May 26, but she cannot afford to find a place for him in summer courses at international schools and may have to take him with her to work.

Parents with children in nursery school have asked public schools to open more summer classes but most have refused, mainly due to staff shortages.

Nguyen Binh Khiem Primary School runs an English class from mid-June until the school year begins on September 5, taking care of students of all ages for VND4.2m a month. There are 500 places, all of which have already been taken.

Ha Thanh Hai, headmaster of Luong The Vinh Primary School, said students needed a break from study, and his school would not be adding extra courses until July.

"Parents should bring children to visit grandparents and relatives to strengthen family bonds," he said.

Another primary school headmaster said many teachers take training courses in summer and do not have time to look after children.
