The Vietnamese PC market in the third quarter grew 13.1 per cent compared with the second quarter and 16.1 per cent over the same period last year, according to the International Data Corporation's (IDC) report.

The increase saw continued growth in sales of laptops and a slight recovery of desktop computers, with over 550,000 laptops and computers sold.

The new school-year season helped to boost weak demand and reduce inventory.

IDC predicts sales will fall in the fourth quarter, with a total of 2 million PCs sold for the entire year.

"The global PC market is facing a shortage of hard-disk supplies due to severe flooding in Thailand and prices for computers will go up," said Phan Thi Hoang Yen, an IDC's expert.

The laptop is dominating the market, thanks to competitive prices among providers and to its convenience.

Dell leads the market with over 14 per cent of market share while Asus follows with approximately 12 per cent.

HP, Acer and Lenovo have market share of 6 per cent up to 11 per cent.

These five providers take up nearly 55 per cent of the Vietnamese laptop market.

Meanwhile, Apple's iPad ranks the highest in the tablet market, but the Android operating system tablet of Samsung, Asus and Acer has become stronger, with 62 per cent of growth in the third quarter.

About 30,000 tablets were sold in the third quarter, a 26 per cent increase compared with the previous quarter.
