People run for peace in Ha Noi

The 40th Ha Noi Moi Newspaper Run for Peace will take place this Sunday around Hoan Kiem Lake.

More than 1,200 people including students, workers, soldiers and foreigners will join the run organised into two categories for amateurs and professionals.

The amateurs can run any length they like from 1,750m (one lap around the lake) to 5,250m (three laps). The professional runners will compete in the 5,250m event for women and 8,750m for men. The event will be broadcast live on VTV6 starting from 7am.

Last year, Thanh Hoa Province's Nguyen Thi Phuong took her third gold medal in a row in the women's professional class. Pham Ngoc Hoang of Khanh Hoa won the men's title.

The successful results of the Khanh Hoa individuals helped them win the women's and men's team events.

The annual event is one of many activities being held to celebrate the 59th anniversary of the capital's liberation (October 10), the 14th anniversary of Ha Noi's UNESCO recognition as a City for Peace, and the newspaper's 56th anniversary (October 24).

Hanoi to host tennis tournament Vietravel Cup 2013

The national tennis tournament Vietravel Cup 2013 will be held at My Dinh Indoor Athletics Gymnasium in Hanoi from October 6-12.

The event attracts strong teams nationwide such as Ho Chi Minh City, Danang, Binh Duong, the Army and the hosts, Hanoi.

Spectators are expected to see fierce competitions with the participation of many national players Do Minh Quan, Le Quoc Khanh, Nguyen Hoang Thien, Vietravel Cup 2012 champion in women’s single event Huynh Phuong Dai Trang, Nguyen Ai Ngoc Van, Huynh Phi Khanh and young talent Ly Hoang Nam.

For the first time, representatives from the Vitar tennis club of Overseas Vietnamese in Russia will participate in the event.

The best athletes will be selected for the national team to compete in the Southeast Asia Tennis Championship 2013 in November.

Vinh voted chairman of handball body

Vu Quang Vinh, editor-in-chief of the Children's Newspaper, has been voted chairman of the Viet Nam Handball Federation.

At a meeting in Ha Noi on Tuesday, the federation was officially established after a year of planning.

Vinh has been involved in sport for some time, and has contributed a lot to the development of handball.

He will be assisted by three deputies.

Dao Duc Kien, head of the Viet Nam Sports Administration's handball department, has been appointed general secretary.

Handball arrived in Viet Nam in the 1980s and became one of National Sport Games 14 years later. It's popularity has grown ever since, especially in Ha Noi and HCM City.

Viet Nam's handball national team have grabbed gold medals at the SEA Games and ASEAN Championships, and bronze medals at the Asian Beach Games in 2010 and 2012.
