VietNamNet Bridge – Fines were meted out to 97 petrol stations for tampering with pump meters to fiddle motorists, said Tran Minh Dung, chief inspector of the Ministry of Science and Technology.

Officials inspected about 1,500 petrol stations.

The inspections were carried out by officials from 48 provincial departments since early this year. Fines totalled VND516 million (US$24,500).

One of the worst offenders was a petrol station in Central Highlands Gia Lai Province, which was fined VND22.5 million ($1,070).
