VietNamNet Bridge – The HCM City-based Phan Dinh Phung Sports Centre have won the women's division at the National U17 Basketball Tournament Cool Air Cup which wrapped up in the central coastal city of Da Nang.

Soc Trang finished second, while Binh Thuan Province's Gifted Sports School and Da Nang's Phan Chu Trinh High School shared third place.

In the men's event, Air Defence- Force arm won the title. Ha Noi's Chu Van An High School came second, while the Tan Binh District-based Sports Centre and Can Tho Gifted Sports School finished third.

The organisers also presented scholarships worth VND5 million (US$240) each to the top five players in the tournament who also recorded good academic performances during the last school year.

The final stage of this year's competition drew the participation of the top 15 men's and women's teams determined by northern, central and southern region qualifying rounds.

The tournament aimed to promote and develop the sport of basketball among young people across the country.

Viet Nam are participating in the fourth ASEAN School Games themed "Spirit, Friendship and Excellence" that kicked off in the Indonesian province of East Java.

The eight-day event, which sees the participation of nearly 1,400 athletes and officials in 11 events, will run until Friday.

The hosts have set a target of bagging 36 gold medals compared to the 21 they won at the same event in Singapore last year, where Thailand came out on top, followed by Singapore, Malaysia and Indonesia.
