VietNamNet Bridge – Popular Hollywood director Phillip Noyce will return to Vietnam to serve as head judge of the WD 48 Hour Film Project (WD 48HFP), the largest film making competition in Vietnam with over 100 film making teams participating to make a film in just 48 hours.

The contest will be launched in HCMC in late September and in Hanoi in mid October.  Winning films have the chance to be screened in the U.S. and at the Cannes Film Festival.

This year’s winners will get great prizes from WD, the main sponsor of the project, as well as cash and scholarships from local film making schools.

“We are surprised at the creativity of young people in Vietnam when we supported the Project Sci-Fi (science-fiction movie) in 2013,” said Julia Hsieh, Vietnam Senior Sales Manager of hard-drive brand Western Digital (WD).

Leading the judging panel, international award winning director Phillip Noyce, known for such movies as Salt (2010) and The Quiet American (2008), is eager to see what the young film makers will create this year.

“I’m really excited to be able to maybe spot and help some inspiring young talent that Vietnam has to offer,” Noyce responded when asked why he’s involved. “I’ve spent a lot of time in Vietnam, and I’ve realized that there are so many talented film makers waiting for their chance to be recognized and the WD 48 Hour Film Project gives them this chance.”

Noyce went on to joke that he would never try to make a film in just 48 hours, as it usually took him 48 months just to write a script.

Phillip Noyce will also be joined by Vietnam’s hottest director Victor Vu, who is participating in the judging panel for the first time.

Originally founded in the U.S., the 48 Hour Film Project is the largest time-based film making competition in the world with now over 130 cities in six continents participating. So far, there have been over 350 short films made since 2010 in the framework of the 48 Hour Film Project in Vietnam.

The HCMC main filming weekend will be run on September 26-28, with Hanoi running a few weeks later from October 17 to 19.
